Bad Cree by Jessica Johns

Mackenzie is a young Cree woman who has been living apart from the rest of her family for the past few years. She couldn’t even bring herself to visit for her sister’s funeral a year ago. However, all of that changes when she begins having terrifying and mysterious dreams. She starts having dreams of seeing her sister, reliving memories, and waking up holding items from her dreams. It scares her so much that she decides that it’s time to return to her family to get some answers.

With the help of Mackenzie’s other sister, cousin, mother, and aunts, she starts to investigate these dreams. Only they become more intrusive, more dangerous, and they start affecting her family physically. She decides that she needs to end this once and for all – but how can she do that without hurting anyone in her family?

There were some stand out things in this book. First, what Mackenzie discovers about her dreams is part of Indigenous folklore and beliefs. I won’t spoil it, but I ended up researching it after reading the book and found it fascinating to learn about. Second, the family element is so strong. She discovers some startling things about the women in her family and the abilities they also possess when they dream. Again, no spoilers, but I thought this factor brought the women in this family together in a great way.

Give this book a try if you like horror! I definitely recommend it.
