This translated work of literary fiction is a cozy, slice of life book about the employees and customers of a bookstore. The main character Yoengju needed a change so she decided to change everything about her life and open up the bookstore. Throughout the book you will learn about the circumstances leading up to her decision and the results of the change, both positive and negative. Author Spotlight: Tracy Clark
An author whose mystery books I recommend is Tracy Clark. The library held a zoom program with her a couple of years ago. She is a Black author based in Chicago and her books are based on Black women detectives in the Chicago area. She has written four books with Cassandra Raines as the main character and two books with Harriet Foster as the main character. Her books are easy and fast and good mystery reads. The Goodbye Cat by Hiro Arikawa
The Goodbye Cat is Hiro Arikawa’s follow-up to The Travelling Cat Chronicles. Similar to the latter, The Goodbye Cat follows cats and their humans through different circumstances in their lives. However, The Goodbye Cat is written in short stories, and most of them are not connected. The last two stories in this book are connected to The Travelling Cat Chronicles, so I suggest reading that before picking this up! In The Goodbye Cat, you will find stories narrated by cats, stories narrated by humans, stories that will devastate you, hopeful stories, and stories that will just make you smile. You’ll
The Labors of Hercules Beal by Gary Schmidt
If your child enjoys myths and legends, give this juvenile fiction novel a try! Follow seventh grader, Hercules Beal, as he navigates his class assignment: perform the Twelve Labors of Hercules in real life. A heartwarming read that touches on the themes of family, loss, humor, and community. Schmidt weaves in excitement and hard moments, yet ends on an uplifting high note for the young reader. Every Night at Midnight by Peter Cheong
Peter Cheong’s Every Night at Midnight arrived at Langley-Adams just in time for Halloween. A sweet and tender book about friendship and accepting others and their differences. It is a howling good book! Bergen Daley, Youth Services Librarian
The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
Our fourth-grade patron recommends this historical fiction Newbery Honor book for elementary school students. Living in Texas in 1899, Calpurnia is curious about science and nature in the world around her, while trying to navigate her family life with six brothers. “I loved it so much, I cannot wait to start the sequel, The Curious World of Calpurnia Tate.” Bergen Daley, Youth Services Librarian
